In 2020, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve prepared to host Formula 1 and MotoGP within an unusually compressed international calendar. Dromo supported the track works, supervised their execution and developed a bespoke asphalt mix named Milagro. The assignment focused on achieving a surface with controlled engineering properties on a circuit characterised by pronounced crests, compressions and rapid changes in longitudinal gradient.

Project engineering in detail
A surface for three-dimensional geometry
Portimão is often described as a roller-coaster circuit because elevation changes are part of almost every sequence. On this type of venue, smoothness cannot be assessed only on a flat plan: longitudinal profile, crossfall, transition length and the way a vehicle unloads over a crest all affect grip and driver confidence.
Bespoke asphalt and site guidance
Dromo developed the Milagro mix for the project and supported the works on site. Material selection, production consistency, paving temperature, compaction and level control have to be coordinated because variation in any one of them can become a bump, texture change or drainage issue at racing speed.
Preparing an existing venue for new demands
The 2020 programme shows the value of focused intervention on a circuit whose layout already had a strong identity. Rather than redesigning the lap, the work addressed the surface and technical preparation required for top-level car and motorcycle use. The same method is applicable when an operating venue must respond quickly to a new calendar, vehicle generation or homologation target.
