Insights / Circuit Safety
Safety begins with vehicle behaviour, not a standard detail.
Run-off and barriers are the visible elements. The engineering starts earlier—with trajectories, speeds, visibility, vehicle types, incident mechanisms and operational response.
Risk is specific to the corner and the use case.
The same geometric feature can produce different risks for cars, motorcycles, karts or road vehicles. Assessment therefore combines three-dimensional track data, simulated and observed trajectories, speed and energy, track-edge conditions, run-off performance, barriers, marshal access and recovery.
Improvement does not always mean removing difficulty. The objective is to reduce unacceptable consequences while retaining the characteristics that give a circuit its sporting identity. Existing venues also require phased solutions that work with land, structures, calendars and homologation processes.
Questions and decisions
A connected safety case.
Trajectories
Study realistic paths, loss-of-control mechanisms and the categories using the track.
02Speed and energy
Quantify approach conditions and the performance demanded from run-off and protection.
03Track edge
Coordinate kerbs, verges, transitions and drainage with vehicle behaviour.
04Run-off and barriers
Select geometry and systems for the actual incident case and available space.
05Visibility and access
Protect sight lines, marshal positions, emergency routes and recovery operations.
06Evidence trail
Document assumptions, iterations and decisions for review and homologation.
